Dashkasan and Gadabay are two stunning neighboring mountainous regions in western Azerbaijan, ideal for travelers seeking off-the-beaten-path experiences, lush nature, and rich history.
Gadabay offers magnificent alpine landscapes and a fascinating slice of history. You can explore the dramatic 12th-century Namerd Gala fortress perched on a mountain peak, and discover the legacy of the German Siemens brothers who built iconic arched bridges for a narrow-gauge railway in the late 19th century.
Dashkasan, known as the 'land of stonecutters', provides an enchanting retreat filled with pristine pastures, pine-covered slopes, and the captivating Amirvar waterfall. The area is also deeply rooted in Caucasian Albanian heritage, meaning there are numerous early medieval archaeological sites and monasteries tucked among the hills.

Two days on one of Trip8's most loved routes, guided by local expert Musa Ahmedov. We leave Baku at dawn for Shamkir, where German families from Württemberg founded the Annenfeld colony in 1818 — tidy stone houses, quiet streets, and a Lutheran church whose interior was brought piece by piece from Germany. From there the road climbs to Gadabay past the Shir-Shir waterfall, an ancient Albanian temple, and preserved German houses, ending with samovar tea in a village home in Gumlu. Day two belongs to the mountains: the 1879 Siemens Bridge, locally known as the "Bloody Bridge", the Zingirovlu stone bridge above the Shamkirchay, an off-road UAZ ride along the river, and a picnic with Gadabay potatoes, farm cheese, and Musa's own honey tasting. In summer it is around 23°C here while Baku sits at 32°C. Route Day 1: Baku → Shamkir → Shir-Shir waterfall → Gadabay → Gumlu village Day 2: Gumlu → Siemens (Bloody) Bridge → Zingirovlu Bridge → Shamkirchay picnic → Baku
